"And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall."

Maya and the Kitten

A few days ago I blogged about a cute little kitten that some friends of mine had rescued.

Then, a few days later, in a blog post "Darwin Scores a Near Miss" by a friend of mine I added a comment about a dog owned by another friend.

Here's another one for you. We have some friends who have a dog...a big dog. I am not a very big fan of dogs, but this one is an exception.

Every week three weeks we meet at their house (we actually rotate which house to be at for Saturday night game night.) So, every three weeks this dog gets to see her people. I say HER people because she most definitely CLAIMS us.

She will actually get ahold of your hand and put it on her belly to be rubbed. She doesn't pay much attention to my hubby because he is allergic to dogs and never pays much attention to the dog.

BUT, IF you pay any attention to her she will be your best friend...at least it seems that way. At least one thing can be said for this dog. She has won MY heart.
Well, the dog (Maya) and the kitten (Miles) met face to face Saturday night. Maya is a rather big dog. Miles is only 4 weeks old.

The friends who are taking care of the kitten brought it with them to our regular Saturday night "game" night. As the kitten was being passed from one adult to another (we still can't get enough of this kitten) Maya noticed this little creature. She knew she had seen the kitten but failed to see who ended up with it.
Maya began doing circles about the room trying to locate it. After a few minutes of this she finally located the kitten. Her jaw began to chomp uncontrollably at the thought of having that kitten in her mouth.

After some calm discussion with the dog she was convinced, to a degree, to just sniff the kitten rather than eat it. She trembled as she sat there with her nose to the kitten (with an adult guarding it.)

All was fine until my friend, who owns the dog, held the kitten. Oh, Maya just couldn't deal with this. She acted as if she had been betrayed. She whined and did more circles about the room.

She finally had to be put in another room to keep the kitten safe. Poor, poor Maya.

Maya is only reacting to her environment the only way she knows how. That can be trained out of her. We have found that bringing a kitten into the house and being a tad bit protective at first will get the dog to claim the cat as part of the pack and then they actually become rather protective of the kitten. If a dog is never raised around a cat and THEN one is brought into the house, the training has to be pretty intensive at first.

You would have loved to have seen our 2 yr old beagle around the new kitten. In a matter of a few days, that cat was HIS baby. The kitten can do literally anything to that dog. He will lay on his side while kitten bites his ears, tail, feet and anything else she wants to play with. He will occasionally take his front paws and bat the kitten around if she seems to get tired and wants to play with something else. He is so very gentle when he does that, and the whole time his face has a look of contentment. The kitty is part of his pack, now, and he is amused to mess around with it.

Yes, I would have loved to see that dog with the kitten.

I wish we could have animals of ANY kind around here...but hubby is allergic to them all. He does alright when we go to someone else's house because he takes an antihistimine (sp) but he doesn't like to do that very often.

Other than that he is pretty near perfect :D

as to the reference...what are friends for?! :)

That's Maya for you. Her heart is bigger than her body when it comes to "Her People". Little kitties are strange and frightening aliens, however.

Hey, Julie! It was actually rather adorable to watch Maya, wasn't it?

I was trying to find that pic of Maya lying across John's laptop (for the blog entry), but it must be on my laptop rather than my desktop.

Starla,

Listen, this house of mine is a circus. It is very entertaining, as a stay at home Dad I think I would lose my marbles sometimes if I did not have the animals around to keep me entertained. They put a lot of energy into that goal.

The most recent 'performance' was when both cats would wait on the Beagle to reach a certain point by the kitchen door. First one cat would wait until he got into the right 'place' and then would leap a good six feet over the kitchen table, bounce off of his back and take off running. Sam's response (the beagle) was to chase the cat around the hall until that cat hides. Then it is the next cat's turn. The process repeats. I watched this for about an hour the other day, and me and my son Charles laughed until our home-school agenda was pretty much meaningless.

I got to hold the kitten the other day and it has grown to where it will now play. I found a "kitty" catcher which had a fun affect on the kitten. It chased that thing and grabbed at it for over an hour.

I told the owner of the kitten that this is why I like kittens and cats. They are so much fun.

Hi Phelonius!

Your newest entertainment had me looking toward my feline for more enjoyment last night!

I was sitting on my couch (does this assume that I am a 'couch potato?' lol) when my one year old Maine Coon tabby jumped up and sat directly on top of the couch. She likes it when I pet and hold her tail, so as I had started doing so, she decided to play a game of "swoosh the tail" and kept flaunting her tail right in front of my face. This had me laughing for 30 minutes. Every time her tail would swoosh, I would continue to laugh.

It's the little times like this that I love having a cat to share my life with.

Please share more of your animal entertanment Phelonius, okay?

Ok, Starla! You got it! There is always something going around this nutty place, and better than half the time it is one or more of the pets.....

I know this entry is getting off the original topic, but just to clarify, I don't think I am a 'couch potato' after reading up on this subject. This is what Webster describes as a 'couch potato':

A couch potato refers to a person who spends most of his or her free time sitting or lying on a couch. This stereotype often refers to lazy and overweight men who watch a lot of television, sometimes in their underwear and sometimes drinking beer. Generally speaking, the term refers to a lifestyle in which children or adults don't get enough physical activity.

[edit] History
The term "couch potato" was first coined in 1976 by a friend of American underground comics artist Robert Armstrong. In the early-1980s, he registered the term as a trademark with the US government; he also co-authored a book with Jack Mingo, called The Official Couch Potato Handbook, which delves into the lives of couch potatoes.[1] [2]

The term eventually entered common American vocabulary, generally defining one who unceasingly watches television as a form of "Transcendental Vegetation (TV for short)." The phrase was entered into the Oxford English Dictionary in 1993. Mingo, the Minister of Information and Propaganda for the official Couch Potatoes organization, explained why the potato was chosen as a vegetable role model: "We're an underground movement, we're all eyes when planted in front of the TV, vegetation is an important part of our existence, and we're Tubers. Get it?"

AND KELLY....I think you should get a kitten!!! Your kids would LOVE it, and so would you! GO FOR IT

Starla,

There is a BIG problem with getting a cat or kitten or even a dog. Hubby is allergic (sp) to them. He manages to deal with it when we go to friends' houses because he takes allegra. But it makes him not as alert as he would like to be. He can't do that at home.
